StaleStateException: Batch update returned

I have an object A with id as composite key object B(Id, customer ID, Personalkey, personalcode, country code, year, eecode )
Im checking the db before inserting with year and eecode and remaining attributes present or not.
If it returns null, I'm Inserting with data.
If it returns object, I'm updating the record, but while updating I'm assigning one of the composite attributes 0.
What is the reason for statestaleException?
