MySQL 8.0.4 : New Default Authentication Plugin : caching_sha2_password - why “caching” is needed?

0

I red an article: https://mysqlserverteam.com/mysql-8-0-4-new-default-authentication-plugin-caching_sha2_password/ and have a couple of questions.

First quote: "when there exists a cached copy of the password hash in memory, it uses a SHA256-based challenge-response mechanism while authenticating a client... This is faster and allows secure authentication over an unencrypted channel." - so, as I undersand, there is a fast "SHA256-based challenge-response mechanism" and it can be used over unencrypted channel, sounds great!

But, what is corellation with "exists a cached copy of the password hash in memory"? Why this cache copy must exists to use "SHA256-based challenge-response mechanism"?

Why not to use "SHA256-based challenge-response mechanism" in all cases, even without any cache involved? It is fast and can be used over unencrypted channel - see no downsides.

Second question: on a pic.2 "full authentication" (https://mysqlserverteam.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/full.jpg) there is an arrow from server to client with description "Sends password over secure connection" - is it really server sends password TO the clinet? Sounds not logical for me. Is it a mistake on picture (wrong arrow direction)?
