Losing the penny on the output
$begingroup$
I'm writing a Python script that will prompt the user for monetary value (such as 11.26). Then, calculate the number of dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. It should use the maximum possible number of dollars, then quarters and so on.
For an amount like 11.56, I do get the right breakdown. However, if I try something like 11.26 it completely skips the penny. I just need some help understanding why it is completely skipping the penny for certain cases.
#!/usr/bin/python2
# Enter an ammount of money: 11.56
# Your amount of $11.56 consists of;
# 11 dollars
# 2 quarters
# 0 dimes
# 1 nickels
# 1 pennies
amt = input("Enter an ammount of money: ")
print "Your amount of $%.2f consists of" % amt
denom = [1.00, 0.25, 0.10, 0.05, 0.01]
d_names = ['dollars', 'quarters', 'dimes', 'nickels', 'pennies']
for i in range(len(denom)):
mod_amt = (amt - (amt % denom[i])) / denom[i]
print "t%.0f %s" % (mod_amt, d_names[i])
if mod_amt != 0:
amt = amt - mod_amt * denom[i]

If you consider penny-rounding errors to be acceptable behavior, then we can review the code as is. However, if you are asking specifically why the rounding error occurs, then the question is off-topic for Code Review. See the help center.
