A medalha foi criada após uma doação de £ 100 à Sociedade Real, em 1709, por Godfrey Copley, um proprietário de terras em Sprotbrough (próximo a Doncaster, sul de Yorkshire), que foi eleito membro da sociedade em 1691.


É uma das dez medalhas concedidas pela Royal Society. Algumas são anuais, outras concedidas em diferentes intervalos, conforme os termos de atribuição. A Medalha Copley alterna entre as ciências físicas e as ciências da vida. Os laureados são eleitos pelos sócios da Royal Society.
