Firebase __session cookie is undefined for some users

0

This issue is pretty wacky. I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into what could possibly be going on here.

In the browser, we do this:

firebase.auth().onIdTokenChanged(user => {
if (user && user.emailVerified) {
return user.getIdToken().then(idToken => {
document.cookie = '__session=' + idToken + ';max-age=' + (idToken ? 3600 : 0);
});
} else {
// clear the __session cookie
document.cookie = '__session=';
}
});

The idea here is anytime the token changes, we update the cookie, and on logout we will clear the cookie.

One user will be attempting to access a file with a GET request (this is why we are using the cookie, as its not an api call, but a link being clicked and opening in a new window to display/download a file) and the __session value will be their token id, just fine.

A second user will ask for the identical file and the request will have no cookies at all.

My only thought was maybe firebase discards the __session cookie if a user has not reauthenticated in a while but the user who is sending the __session cookie with no problem has not reauthenticated in maybe weeks as well as the user who's req.cookies is empty.

I've checked the cookies in the browser and it's definitely there.

Anyone know whats going on?
