React.cloneElement - key differs in cloned children

0

So I want to clone children passed to my component but it is crucial that the keys stays the same. What I did is this:

const clonedChildren = React.Children.map(children, (child) => {
const cloned = React.cloneElement(child, {
exposedKey: child.key,
});
console.log('Cloned child', { child, cloned }); // (1)
return cloned;
});
console.log('Children', { clonedChildren, children }); // (2)

The variables child and cloned logged in the (1) have the same key, so that's ok, but the fun part is the next (2) console.log.

clonedChildren is an array, but the key a cloned was e.g. hello, the key inside the clonedChildren is now .$hello.

Why is this happening and can I make it work the way I would expect it?
